Second Time Losing to Lightsabers
But At Least I'm A Good Writer
Yesterday was the Derek Freese Film Festival at Temple University and my film Mature for his Age was an official selection. Of course the $500 prize got me excited and I was looking forward to paying off my tires. The festival began and entries ranged from three minute music videos with girls frolicking with hay and horses to 10 second crude blossoming rose animations. Very few films stood out to me and I was quite confident I’d be taking first prize. But of course, I was beaten by a video about how sad dead people are in third place, a black and white biopic of a lightsabered “Admiral Awesome” cluttered with creative cow tutorials in second, and of course a teen drama that wasn’t actually a film at all winning grand prize. Upon receiving my Honorable Mention certificate, I was told, “You’re a great writer, Nik, keep it up.” Thanks, I’ll be sure to include teenagers killing dads with lightsabers next time. Hopefully Mature does better at Rumschpringe, tickets are on sale now online!
